If you've been looking for blinds, you may have come across concerns about window blind safety in Canada. The post will give you a brief overview of the new window blind safety regulations in Canada. If you're buying new blinds, you don't have to worry as blind retailers have all implemented the new regulations.
Are blinds with cords illegal in Canada?
It’s not illegal to own blinds with cords in Canada.
However, blind manufacturers and blind retailers have had to change their practices to comply with new Health Canada regulations, which limit the length and use of cords in blinds.
On April 15, 2019, the Canadian government introduced the Corded Window Coverings Regulations under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. These regulations are designed to reduce the safety risks associated with corded window coverings.
In particular, the aim is to dramatically reduce the hazard these blinds pose to very young children.
Window Blinds Safety Regulations in Canada
The new regulations require the secure attachment of any part of a corded window covering that could be a choking hazard.
They also limit the lead content of external components and specify that cords must remain out of reach to prevent accidents.
Key measurements include that a reachable cord with one free end must not be longer than 22 cm to avoid creating a risk to children. Similarly, the perimeter of any loop formed by a cord should not exceed 44 cm. If two cords can be connected, their combined length must also meet these safety criteria.
In essence, these regulations are a comprehensive effort to ensure that corded window coverings sold in Canada are safe for all users. They particularly protect young children by ensuring that the window coverings are designed and used to minimize or entirely remove these dangers.
What should I do if I have corded window blinds?
If you're concerned about window blind safety, getting new blinds may be a good idea.
The most effective measure is to replace any blinds or window coverings that have reachable cords with safer, cordless versions. There's a variety of these safe options available that are both affordable and easy to install, suitable for all types of windows.
However, if replacing them immediately isn't an option, there are temporary safety measures you can implement. These include keeping cords out of children's reach, avoiding placing climbable furniture near windows, securely attaching any tension devices to the wall, and ensuring there are no looped cords that could pose a risk.
